The Vampire Diaries' in relation to Mythology
The vampire diaries would be considered a mythology because it is a story about tons of different supernatural species. Supernatural species such as vampires, werewolves, witches, doppelgangers, and sirens are all part of mythology. The way that vampire diaries portrayed these supernatural species is different than your original mythologies but it is a TV show so the producers want to make it more realistic, drama filled, action packed, and in some ways more relatable so that people will watch it. One thing that is consistent with the more original mythologies is that vampires cannot walk in the sun but of course the vampire diaries came up with a work around for that and also werewolves only turn on full moons just like stated in more original mythologies.
In the vampire diaries, vampires have the ability to:
Compel other people.
Super hearing
Cut off their "humanity switch."
Walk in the sun thanks to "daylight rings."
Super speed, super strength
Lives for centuries.
Their weaknesses are:
Werewolf bites
Wood stakes to the heart
Vervain
The original vampires
In the vampire diaries, the originals have the ability to:
Compel humans and vampires.
Super speed, super hearing, and super strength
Immortal
Can walk in the sun without a daylight ring because fire doesn't hurt them.
Their weaknesses are:
The white oak wood or ash.
Vervain
Vervain is used to weaken vampires and it also protects human's from being compelled and vampires from being compelled by the originals.

Turn on full moons.
Has super strength even when not in wolf form.
Their bite is fatal to vampires.
Their weaknesses are:
Silver in the heart
Wolfsbane
In the vampire diaries, hybrids have the ability to:
Turn whenever they want.
Has super strength, super speed, and super hearing.
Heightened senses
Their bite is fatal to vampires.

Interesting Information about vampire diaries
This show takes place mainly in Mystic Falls, Covington Ga. Some of the scenes do take place in New Orleans but not many.
Some of the scenes with the wolfs are shot with real wolves that are somewhat trained.
This show is a very popular show and even turned into a serious with the originals coming out after the vampire diaries and then the legacies was created after the originals.
Throughout this show some scenes are shot with certain songs to add to the scene and add to the emotion that the scene gives off.
